Brett Toth seeking waiver from Army to play for Eagles

Former Army tackle and 2018 West Point graduate Brett Toth is awaiting military approval to pursue a professional football career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Toth’s request for a waiver was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The request comes after President Donald Trump’s statement in May supporting service-academy athletes’ quest to play professional sports immediately after graduation.

Toth, who has served one year of active duty, was required to complete the first two years of his five-year service following graduation before applying for a waiver. He will turn 23 on September 1.

It’s unclear on if an updated policy regarding Trump’s order has officially been changed. Though, Air Force long snapper Austin Cutting, the Vikings’ 2019 seventh-round pick, was permitted to sign with Minnesota.

NFL scouts regularly visited Army practices and games during Toth’s 2017 senior season. Toth, who is 6-foot-5 and played at 310 pounds as a senior, was invited to Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game and impressed. Scouts from 10 teams attended Toth’s Pro Day in April 2018.

Toth was projected to be taken as early as the fifth round of the NFL draft. He was passed in the draft likely because of his military service commitment.

The Eagles originally signed former Army offensive lineman and wide receiver Ali Villanueva to a free-agent contract in 2014. Philadelphia cut Villanueva, who has become an All-Pro tackle for the Steelers, protecting Ben Roethlisberger’s blindside.
