Game Week: Georgia Southern

Army puts its seven-game home winning streak on the line against a solid Georgia Southern team at noon Saturday.

Georgia Southern (6-2) has won three straight games since a 28-14 loss to undefeated and No. 15 Coastal Carolina. The Eagles’ only other loss was to then No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette (7-1) on a 53-yard buzzer-beating field goal.

This will not be an easy bounce-back game for Army coming off a 38-12 loss at Tulane. Army is down to 3.5-point home favorite.

Georgia Southern’s offense, which is averages 27.4 points per game, is led by redshirt-senior quarterback Shai Werts (605 rushing yards, 789 passing yards, 5 TD, 6 INT). The Eagles spread the ball out on the ground. Three players – Werts, J.D. King and Wesley Kennedy – has scored five or more rushing touchdowns. Moore is out for the year with an injury.

The game is a sort of reunion for Army’s Jeff Monken. Monken led Georgia Southern to three straight FCS semifinals (2010-2012) in his four seasons before taking the Army job in December 2013.

Monken had said in the past that he didn’t want to schedule Georgia Southern in the past due to his close ties with people there. But when the coronavirus pandemic caused eight ofArmy’s 2020 originally scheduled games to be cancelled, the Georgia Southern game was added.

Georgia Southern head coach Chad Lunsford was Monken’s receivers coach in 2013. Georgia Southern defensive line coach Victor Cabral coached the same position for Monken from 2010-2013.
