Georgia lineman Aidan Perkins connects and commits to Army

Aidan Perkins’ first impressions of the Army football program and West Point were strong on his June 20 visit.

Perkins, an offensive lineman from Brookwood (Ga.), had made solid connections with Jeff Monken, his staff and current players. A tour of the campus and facilities added to Perkins’ comfort level.

“It was like no place I have ever seen,” Perkins said. “You get there and it’s just beautiful.”

Perkins wanted to commit on the spot but he still had visits planned to three FCS schools. After seeing Harvard, Columbia and Georgetown, Perkins’ opinion did not change.

A surprise was planned for Perkins’ family. He
placed a call into Army’s coaching staff on July 28, giving his verbal commitment to the Black Knights on July 28. Perkins didn’t tell his mother, Alicia, until the next day on her birthday.

“She was thrilled,” said Perkins, entering his third year as a starter for Brookwood. “Her and my brother were both here and they were extremely happy.

“In my mind if I’m committed to somewhere I don’t want to go to other places,” Perkins said. “If I’m committed I’m 100% in.”

Air Force offered and heavily recruited Perkins, who is 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds. Perkins did not visit Air Force. FBS schools Troy, Arkansas State and South Alabama also offered Perkins.

“Colorado is just too far from home for me,” Perkins said. “My dad’s side of the family is from New York so I have a ton of family up there and family friends that we know. It just worked out really well.”

Perkins said the biggest reason why he committed to Army were the conversations he had during his West Point visit.

“The people are amazing,” Perkins said. “If you go to West Point, you know everyone you are around are going to be stellar human beings.

“I met with the coaches and it was like we’ve known each other for years. They were just very nice and welcoming people.”

Perkins was Brookwood’s starting center his sophomore and junior seasons. He’s moving to right tackle for his senior year.

Army is recruiting Perkins to play center. Perkins will be the first in his immediate family to serve in the military after graduation.

“It’s pretty exciting but at the same time it’s nerve-wracking,” Perkins said. “I don’t really know a whole lot of what it is going to be like. I can listen to everybody and what they say to me, but at the end of the day I have to experience it to fully understand it.”

Georgia continues to be a strong recruiting state for the Black Knights.

Buford linebacker Jackson Powell committed last week.

Blessed Trinity lineman Jackson Filipowicz announced his commitment Tuesday. Navy and Air Force had offered Filipowicz.

Thanks for the info Sal, your coverage is excellent and your standard high. I’ll follow your trail wherever it leads as you are “the” Army source.
