One glance onto the field during Army’s first practice of the preseason caused a double take.

A player, wearing No. 19 with the name “Nachtigal” on the back was participating in a defensive drill.

James Nachtigal, Army’s hard-hitting linebacker, was a senior in the Black Knights’ 11-2 season last year, right?

Correct.

Carrying on his brother’s tradition with the No. 19 jersey was Troy, a freshman linebacker.

The freshman class practiced before the veterans as has been the case for the last few seasons under Jeff Monken. After the veterans stretched, the plebes blended in for some individual work before calling it a day.

Army hasn’t added freshman to its online roster as of this post.

Here are some numbers for freshman:
DB Fabrice Voyne 1
QB Steven Migut 5
QB Jemel Jones 7
DB Mondo Walker 14
CB Tim Boone 15
DB Isaiah Morris 18
LB Troy Nachtigal 19
SB Justin Lescouflair 28
DB Daryan McDonald 32
LB Peyton Hampton 40
LB  Trevor Cosenke 48
TE Ben Koch 49
DL Darius Richardon 62
WR Reikan Donaldson 83
DL Chris Frey 89
K Cole Talley 96
K Andrew Bagley 99

Senior quarterback Kelvin Hopkins said this preseason feels different than a year ago when the starter wasn’t determined. Now, Hopkins is a captain coming off a sensational 1,000-yard rush and 1,000-yard pass season.

“The grind is still the same,” Hopkins said. “You still want to go out there and work every day to get better.”

Junior offensive lineman Peyton Reeder was one of the players that was limited on the first day of practice. Reeder, who started 11 games at right guard in 2018, will get a crack at replacing three-year starting center Bryce Holland along with senior Jack Sides.

“Peyton is a little banged up right now,” Monken said. “He’ll get back out there. We will piece that together in whatever way works best. It might be Peyton Reeder as the center and Jack as a guard or Peyton Reeder as the center and two other guys at guard. It may be Jack at center and Peyton at guard or Jack at center and Peyton not starting at guard.”

Junior Ke’Shaun Wells, who played wide receiver last season, is starting camp off at cornerback.
