#HopforHeisman

Kelvin Hopkins’ teammates began their campaign seeking recognition for the Army’s senior quarterback in June.

Junior offensive lineman Peyton Reeder started the hashtag #HopforHeisman on Twitter promoting Hopkins as a candidate for college football’s top individual award.

While the winner of the Heisman Trophy will be decided on the field, Hopkins received a few preseason accolades this week more than a month before he and the Black Knights’ 2019 opener on August 30 at home against Rice.

Hopkins, who became the first Army player to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in the same season last year, was named to the watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

The Maxwell Award is given to the nation’s best all-around player. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was the 2018 Maxwell winner.

Hopkins was one of 30 candidates for the O’Brien Award, won by Oklahoma quarterback and No. 1 pick Kyler Murray last year.

Shutdown cornerback Elijah Riley was the only player among the three FBS service academies to be named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list for the nation’s top defender player. A three-year starter, Riley has 122 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 19 pass breakups and four interceptions in his career.
