Junior cornerback Javhari Bourdeau was awarded the defensive player of the game by Army’s coaching staff in Black Knights 14-7 season-opening win over Rice.
Bourdeau set the tone for the defense early with a jarring hit on Rice wide receiver Austin Trammel causing an incomplete pass on the game’s second play. He had two tackles and combined on a tackle for loss.
Senior quarterback Kelvin Hopkins earned offensive player of the game honors after accounting for both of Army’s touchdowns on a 2-yard run and 17-yard pass to Kell Walker. Hopkins led Army in rushing (80 yards) for the ninth game in his career.
Senior punter Zach Potter was named the special teams player of the game after averaging 43.8 yards on four punts and placing down two perfect holds on extra points.
Bourdeau, Hopkins and Potter were among the 30 players to receive Ranger jersey for extraordinary effort in the Rice victory. Players picked for the honor wear the jerseys during practice this week.
