Super Late Thoughts: Tulane

Army needed a near-perfect game to keep its 15-game home winning streak alive against a very good Tulane team.

The early stages of the game were one of poorest tackling displays by the Black Knights in quite some time. At least twice, Cole Christiansen got a good surge into the backfield but the support could bring down Tulane’s rusher.

Two weeks of preparation couldn’t simulate the speed of Tulane’s offense in a 42-33 loss.

Army gave up 21 straight points twice in the game.

Tulane looked like a Top 25 team on both sides of the ball with its speed.

Army was outrushed for the first time since its 2018 season opener against Duke.

Jeff Monken said he was going by analytics when he decided to go for 2 down 42-27 in the fourth quarter. Army failed on the 2-point conversion and tried again on its next touchdown and didn’t convert.

Kelvin Hopkins attempted a career-high 24 passes. Hopkins’ previous high was 21 in the 2018 season-opening loss to Duke. The senior captain played until the last whistle and never stopped believing the Black Knights could pull out the game. Just watch the the final play. Hopkins should have been sacked for a major loss but the quarterback weaved his way through Tulane’s defense for a positive gain.

Tulane’s defense eliminated any production on pitch and outside runs forcing Hopkins and Army’s passing game to beat them. Slotbacks combined for negative 8 yards on 4 carries.
