The Black Knights Lose Top 25 Battle To Cincinnati

It was another hot start for the Army defense when Jabari Moore deflected a pitch and picked up the ball, returning it for a touchdown. Moore also intercepted a Cincinnati pass in the first quarter as well.

But penalties were a big story of today’s game.

Army, ranked 22nd in the AP poll, was flagged for 11 penalties for 114 total yards which caused a lack of momentum on offense on the day. A stout No. 14 Cincinnati defense capitalized on this only allowing three points off on Army’s offensive drives.

It was the first time that Army didn’t score an offensive touchdown since 2015.

The Black Knights had only thrown nine passes all season coming into today but playing from behind and several 2nd and 3rd and long positions forced Army into passing the ball 21 times, which is not how the offense wants to be playing.

“We just didn’t play well enough to win, certainly not on offense,” Army coach Jeff Monken said. “Score only three points on offense it’s hard to win a college football game.”

Monken did give props to how well the defense played barring a couple of big plays and busted coverage. The defense only allowed 69 yards on 32 carries.

Chris Skyers, Javhari Bourdeau and Jon Rhattigan helped lead the way on defense adding some big tackles to Moore’s turnovers.

Safety Cedrick Cunningham and linebacker Jeremiah Lowery missed the game due to injury. Senior defensive lineman Amadeo West and freshman wide receiver Isaiah Alston were injured during the game.

Next week, Army will host Abilene Christian, an FCS team, where they will look to get back on track on a big way.
